Increase CR
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/5zt03q/quick_and_easy_template_to_increase_monster_cr/
easy templates to apply to a monster on the fly.
Tier 1 (CR 1/8 - CR 1/2)
- +20 HP
- +2 DPR
Tier 2 (CR1- CR19)
- +15 HP
- +6 DPR
- Odd increase (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc):
- +1 AC
- +1 Attack Bonus
- +1 Save DC
- Tier 3 (CR20 and higher)
- +44 HP
- +18 DPR
- Odd increase (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc):
- +1 Attack Bonus
- +1 Save DC
What does this all mean: First of all, this is just a "simple" template to apply to a monster. This is not based on the creatures actual statistics (STR, DEX etc.), but on the table in the DMG. There are 3 tiers, depending on how much you want to increase a creatures statistics. Lets say you want to go from CR 1/4 to CR 1/2, then you just increase the stats by +20 Hitpoints and its "Damage per Round" (DPR) by +2. HP are a bit off because CR 1/8 has such a wide HP range, but for ease of use i just took the average in this Tier. I didn't include CR 0 since i feel those creatures are so insignificant that it shouldn't matter that much.
If you want to increase, lets say, a CR1 creature to CR3, you'd use the Tier 2 template.
Because of the bounded accuracy, AC, Attack Bonus and Save DC don't go up with every increase in CR. So your first CR increase also ups AC, Attack Bonus and Save DC, but the 2nd doesn't. Just in case you're wondering what "every odd increase" means.
In Tier 3, AC doesn't increase at all, so if you wanna buff up your Ancient Red Dragon, its AC should already be fine.
It should be said, this is not exact math, but more a way to boost your monsters on the fly. If you want to create exact creature statistics, i'd recommend using your DMG and creating it from the ground up. This also works best if you don't overdo it with increases. It might be better to create that CR17 werewolf right from the start instead of just increasing it.
If you have questions or wanna give feedback (or maybe correct me if i made a mistake), feel free to do so.
