The Tome of Strahd is an ancient work penned by Strahd. The book is bound in a thick leather cover with steel hinges and fastenings. The pages are of parchment and very brittle. Stains and age have taken their toll, but some of the first section is readable and most early chapter and section titles.
You parse through the book and find most of the readable text written in cipher or notes in a curious shorthand that must be unique to Strahd. The readable beginning section looks to be a key with the title "War & Peace" that may contain clues to deciphering later chapters. Later sections of the key are blurred as if water damaged, and are unreadable.
To decipher a section you need to dedicate at least an uninterrupted hour investigating and referencing the introduction. At first glance the water damaged sections seem near impossible to decipher but maybe not entirely. You may investigate any section that is visibly readable and may find ways to make the damaged text more legible. A second person may Help if they are proficient in Investigation, granting advantage on the attempt. Any person investigating or helping has -5 penalty on Passive Perception while trying to decipher a section.
Introduction
War & Peace
Visible
I am the Ancient. I am the Land. My beginnings are lost in the darkness of the past. I was the warrior, I was good and just. I thundered across the land like the wrath of a just god, but the war years and the killing years wore down my soul as the wind wears stone into sand.
All goodness slipped from my life. I found my youth and strength gone, and all I had left was death. My army settled in the valley, renamed for my father as we took power over the people in the name of a just god, but with none of a god’s grace or justice.
I called for my family, long unseated from their ancient thrones, and brought them here to settle in the castle father and I built for them. Ravenloft. They came with a younger brother of mine, Sergei, nearly grown, and I had never known him. He was handsome and youthful. I hated him for both.

Andral I
Pan ddeuthum â byddinoedd fy nhad i'r wlad hon, yr oedd cymydog ifanc disglair o'r Morninglord o'r enw Andral yn eu plith. Ysbrydolodd ei bregethau'r milwyr a hybu eu morâl yn ogystal â'u ffydd. Wrth i ni ddarostwng y llwythau derwyddol a barbaraidd brodorol, ceisiai ledaenu addoliad ei dduw ymhlith y cyntefig oedd yn addoli natur. Yr oedd yn enaid caredig, yn aml yn fy nghynghori i dymeru fy llid a dangos trugaredd tuag at ein gelynion. Ynddo fe deuthum o hyd i gyfrinachydd a chynghorydd dibynadwy.
Andral II
Hyfforddodd Andral protégé i'w olynu, gwraig ifanc danllyd o'r enw Markovia. Cafodd ei hun ar y rheng flaen gyda fy dynion, yn iachau ac yn eu cefnogi mewn brwydr. Er fy mod wedi fy nghaledu, hyd yn oed wedi fy hogi gan yr ymgyrchoedd hirfaith, roedd hi fel pe bai'n tyfu'n fwyfwy arswydus gyda dioddefaint ac anghyfiawnder rhyfela. Cwestiynodd fy nulliau a'm cymhellion yn yr ymdrech ryfel. Ar y dechrau, yn breifat. Ond pan na fyddwn i'n mynd yn ôl yn erbyn fy ngelynion, hi a feirniadodd y rhyfel a'm gorchymyn yn agored. “Monster, predator” oedd y geiriau a ddefnyddiodd yn fy erbyn. Am yr herfeiddiad agored hwn gallwn fod wedi ei dienyddio. Ond arhosais fy llaw a'i hatgoffa mai gwirfoddol oedd ei gwasanaeth yn fy myddin. Er i Andral geisio cyfryngu ein hanghydfod, rhoddodd y gorau i'w chomisiwn a sefydlodd abaty ger y gwersyll yn Krezkov.
Vistani
Gyda chymorth Rahadin, cafodd gwrthryfel y Dusk Elves ei falu o'r diwedd, torrwyd eu harweinyddiaeth a chafodd eu lluoedd eu cyfeirio. Roedd y fuddugoliaeth yn gostus iawn, fodd bynnag. Cefais fy nghlwyfo'n ddifrifol mewn cudd-ymosod gan farchogion Argynvost wrth i ni ymlid, a dyna'r cyfan y gallwn ei gasglu ar fy marchogaeth a marchogaeth i ffwrdd. Yn hudolus ac ar fin mynd yn anymwybodol, clywais gerddoriaeth a chwerthin... gwersyll. Cefais fy hun yn deffro mewn pabell gynnes, gyda wynebau dwsin o wylwyr yn gwenu arnaf. Roedd y Vistani hyn, fel y dysgais i'w galw, yn caniatáu i mi aros gyda nhw. Fe wnaeth eu merched meddyginiaeth iacháu fy nghlwyfau, a chuddiodd eu dynion fi rhag sgowtiaid Dusk Elf a oedd wedi fy olrhain.
Ar ôl i mi adfer fy nerth, y Vistani hyd yn oed yn fy arwain yn ddiogel adref. Cyhoeddais o'r dydd hwnnw allan, fod pob Vistani yn rhydd i groesi terfynau fy nhiroedd wrth eu hamdden.
Pŵer... dwi angen mwy o bŵer. Efallai ei bod hi'n bryd ymweld â'r deml hynafol honno y soniodd Rahadin amdani, wedi'i chuddio yn uchel yn y mynyddoedd.
Andral III
Pan heddychais gorachod y coed heathen, credai Andral fod angen dangos goleuni'r Morninglord iddynt a rhoi'r gorau i'w harfer cyntefig o addoli natur haniaethol. Pan dorrais i lawr y ddraig arian nerthol Argynvost a lladd ei holl urdd o farchogion teyrngarol, roedd yn ddistaw iawn. Yn fuan wedi hynny, fe adawodd yntau fi. Rwy'n clywed ei fod wedi ymgartrefu yn y pentrefan sy'n datblygu o'r enw Vallaki.
Andral IV
Nid yw Andral na Markovia, nac unrhyw un o'u dilynwyr, wedi nodi y byddent yn mynychu priodas Sergei a Tatyana, fy anwylyd. Yr wyf yn cyfaddef fy mod yn canfod fy hun yn awyddus am eu doethineb a'u cyngor yn yr amser anodd hwn. Mae Rahadin, efallai ei fod yn ffyddlon, yn gwneud sgyrsiwr tlawd.
Andral V
Gwelais fy hen ffrind eto. Roedd oedran wedi hindreulio ei wyneb, ac roedd tristwch dwfn yn ei lygaid. Roedd wedi trefnu grŵp o dderwyddon a shifftwyr a dynion ifanc blin i'm gwrthwynebu'n gyfrinachol. Pa fodd y meiddiai efe fy ngwared, Uywodraethwr cyfiawn y wlad hon trwy olyniaeth ? Mae'n honni ei fod yn gwybod fy hud, yn anwybodus o'r cyfoeth helaeth o lên yr wyf wedi'i ddarganfod yn yTeml Amber, yr ystorfa a'r carchar. Ymosododd ei ganlynwyr arnaf mewn cuddfan llwfr, a gwnaethant waith brawychus o fyr o'm silio a'm gwarchodwyr. Daliodd fi yn ei le gyda symbol sanctaidd hynafol, a heb eto gyfarwydd yn llwyr â fy nghorff a phwerau newydd, yr wyf yn ei chael yn anodd i wrthsefyll. Ond pan oedd yn petruso i ddelio ergyd angheuol, yr wyf yn mynd fel niwl a dianc. Bydd fy nialedd yn gyflym. Hyd yn oed nawr mae fy bleiddiaid a silio a marw yn ymosod ar weddillion ei luoedd. Mae dy ddyddiau wedi eu rhifo, hen gyfaill.
Markovia
Gyda chwedl waharddedig y deml ar Fynydd Ghakis, rwyf wedi dod yn elyn anrhagweladwy yn wir. Ac eto y bwrlwm hwn a arweiniodd at y clwyfau gwaradwyddus a gefais yn nwylo Markovia. Yn ôl pob tebyg wedi ei chynhyrfu gan farwolaeth Andral gan fy nwylo, gorymdeithiodd gyda llu bach o glerigwyr a phencampwyr arfog a thorri trwy byrth Castle Ravenloft. Ni welais erioed ffyrnigrwydd mor selog mewn brwydr a phan y byddai'r wraig honno'n gwisgo'i byrllysg i'm herbyn. Gan sianelu dicter llosgi ei duw trwy ei hofferyn ymladd, dyna'r cyfan y gallwn ei wneud i ddal ei ergydion a goroesi'r ymosodiad. Pe bai hi wedi fy nghyfaddef i unrhyw le ond y tu mewn i'r lair hon, rhaid i mi gyfaddef efallai mai hi oedd yn fuddugol. Yn ddiarwybod iddi, mae'r castell yn greadur o anhrefn sy'n plygu i fy ewyllys. Gan alw ar ei phwerau tywyll a'm hadfywiad annaturiol, llwyddais i oroesi. Roedd ei fflam llosgi bron â diffodd, rhoddais farwolaeth arwr iddi. Fel arwydd o barch rwyf wedi claddu ei gweddillion corfforol yn y crypts islaw Ravenloft.

Souls I
Mae cylch tywyll ailymgnawdoliad wedi cyrraedd ei derfynau. Ar draws fy myd mae plant sy'n cael eu geni'n wag. Nid oes yn y testynau hyn ond tameidiau o'r enaid angenrheidiol i feidrol. Er eu bod fel arall yn gyffredin, maent yn arbennig o ansicr, ofnus, a diddychymyg. Ond o ddiddordeb mwyaf i mi yw nad wyf yn dod o hyd i unrhyw gynhaliaeth yn eu gwaed. Mae rhywfaint o hanfod hanfodol yn ddiffygiol. Nid yw'n fwy maethlon na thywod i ddyn sychedig. Byddaf yn astudio hwn i basio'r amser. Rwy’n sicr bod llawer o rieni siomedig ac anhapus yn Barofia y gellir eu hargyhoeddi i ildio eu plant pant i’m gofal.
Souls II
Rwy'n gwybod nad wyf yn wallgof. Rwy'n gweld wynebau cyfarwydd yn cael eu haileni. Mae rhywbeth yn y niwloedd yn dal yr eneidiau a fyddai'n mynd y tu hwnt -- gan orfodi rhyw fath o ailymgnawdoliad ymhlith fy mhobl. Ydy'r Pwerau Tywyll yn golygu fy ngwawdio? Trapio pobl gyfan mewn cylch diddiwedd o drallod ochr yn ochr â fy un i? Efallai eu bod nhw'n fy mhoenydio â gobaith ffug - y bydd Tatyana, fy anwylyd, yn cael ei haileni hefyd.
Barovia I
Y mae y niwl sydd yn awr yn amdo ac yn treiddio trwy y wlad hon yn farwol i'r rhai a geisiant fyned heibio heb fy ewyllys i. Mae hefyd yn fy nghadw i yn y carchar hwn. Mae fy llw i'r Vistani yn wir hyd heddiw. Maent yn unig yr wyf yn caniatáu i basio drwy'r niwloedd. Ni wnaf niwed iddynt, ac ni chymeraf ddim yn anfoddog fel fy nghydweithwyr. Cymaint yw fy niolch am eu gweithred o garedigrwydd tuag ataf, a chymaint yw fy edmygedd o'u hawch am fywyd. Eu cynhesrwydd, eu hangerdd, eu llawenydd, y gallu syml i basio trwy'r niwl ... Maent yn gwybod y cyfan na allaf yn awr, ac yr wyf yn eiddigeddus iawn wrthynt.
Barovia II
Mae roc mawr Mynydd Ghakis yn parhau i fod yn berygl. Fe'i tawelais yn ystod fy ymgyrch fawr, ond rwy'n ofni y bydd yn ysglyfaethu fy mhobl yn fuan os bydd y llynnoedd yn tyfu'n ddiffrwyth. Dim ond i mi y mae'r fraint honno wedi'i chadw.
Barovia III
Mae Baba Lysaga bellach yn byw yn adfeilion corsiog Berez. Rydym yn parhau ar delerau da. Mae hi'n bwerus, ac yn beryglus. Mae hi hefyd wedi cymuno â'r Tywyll. Mae rhywbeth aloof amdani; Rhaid i mi ei chadw hi o bell. Ni allaf fentro gwneud gelyn iddi.
Barovia IV
Mae meddwl Exethanter yn erydu. Ar fy ymweliad diweddaraf â''Amber Temple, yr ystorfa a'r carchar, cefais ef yn chwerthinllyd ac yn tynnu sylw. Ymddengys nad yw'n gallu cofio llawer, arbed ei hud. Nid wyf yn cenfigennu wrth y cen, ac nid wyf yn ei dosturio. Ymddengys i mi ddewis yn fwy doeth fyth yn moddion anfarwoldeb.
Silver
Mae marchogion arian melltigedig Vladimir wedi lladd band anturus arall. O'r hyn a dystiais wrth wylo, y marchogion a'u lladdasant am geisio fy ninystr. Nid wyf yn deall pam y byddai fy ngelynion marwol, gweision Argynvost, yn fy amddiffyn. Ni allaf ond rhesymu bod Vladimir yn credu bod marwolaeth yn unig yn ormod o dranc i mi. Efallai ei fod yn dymuno dwyn tystiolaeth i'm dedfryd dragwyddol.

Magic Item
Tome of Strahd
Wondrous item, legendary (requires attunement)
The Tome of Strahd is an ancient work penned by Strahd von Zarovich himself. This grim memoir is bound in a thick leather cover with steel hinges and fastenings. The pages are of parchment and very brittle. Stains and age have taken their toll, but some of the first section is readable and most early chapter and section titles.
Though, this is no mere tome. Infused with magic from whatever Dark Powers created this land, it is the metaphysical embodiment of the memories of Count Strahd von Zarovich, no matter how faint and subconscious, or how twisted by his ego. The tome seems to have a will of its own.
Unravel. The first time a person reads, or have read aloud to them, a deciphered section of the Tome of Strahd they gain Inspiration.
After attuning to the Tome of Strahd and when not in sunlight you also gain additional benefits.
Spells. You can use an action to cast the following spells from it at will: Charm Person, Gaseous Form, Spider Climb, Vampiric Touch, Animate Dead and Regenerate (only on self and only the continous effect). The spell save DC for these spell are 17. After you cast a spell in this way, roll a D6; that spell recharges on a 6. All uses recharge next dusk.
Tactics. Attacks you make against a Ravenloft faction agent (Strahd or allies of Strahd) become magical.
Find Weakness. You use an action, bonus action or an appropriate reaction to grant yourself or an ally you can see a 2d6 bonus on their next roll against Strahd or an ally of Strahd and on saves against charm effects within two rounds. This feature has four charges. You can choose to use all four charges to instead give all allies you can see within 10ft the same bonus. Two charges recharge on a short rest and all used charges recharge on a long rest.
Legendary Actions. Activate supernatural powers of the Tome of Strahd as an action, bonus action or reaction. As long as the powers are active, you may use one legendary action per round. Choose one:
- Lore. You cast a spell from the Tome, activate Find Weakness (uses 1 less charge than normal) or give one other character Inspiration.
- Move. You move up to your speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
- Strike. You make one unarmed strike, grapple or shove.
- React. You gain one additional reaction until the start of your next turn.
After you use it, you take 1d4 unpreventable necrotic damage, ignoring temporary hit points, and the action refreshes at the start of your next turn. If you take no such action for a full round the powers stop and they recharge after a short or long rest.
Legendary Resistance (1/Day). If you fail a saving throw, you can choose to succeed instead at the cost of 1/5 of your maximum hit points (round up).
Will of the Tome. The Tome of Strahd may try to wrest some control of its use. At dusk, determine randomly between Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma and make a DC 13 saving throw for it. If you fail the save, the DM determines what the Tome tries to accomplish. A bloodthirsty schemer may receive extra powers from the tome while a holy cleric may find limits on the Tome's uses.
One with the Grave. Attuning to an item so inexorably connected to The Devil is not without some detriment. You begin to take on an unnaturally pale completion and become cold to the touch. You are unable enter a residence without an invitation from one of the occupants. The sun is slightly painful, dealing 1hp of radiant damage to you per minute and causing healing spells on you to have half effect while in sunlight. You take 5 acid damage if you end your turn in running water. If you take 10 or more damage from radiance or acid damage from running water during a rest, you do not gain the benefits of that rest.
